Spanish Unemployment Soars
[info]doiyhy

MADRID—Spain's jobless claims shot up 4% in January from December to 4.59 million, a sign that the euro zone's fourth-largest economy is still shedding jobs at a record rate.

All sectors posted more claims but the rise was sharpest for services at 5.1%. In construction, weighed down by a four-year property slump, the number of residents registered as job seekers rose 2.1%. Compared with the same period a year ago, overall claims rose 8%.

"This is evidence of the country's deep economic crisis, and the fact that labor reforms implemented by the previous government haven't stopped the practice of laying off employees as a way to adjust to lower demand," said Engracia Hidalgo, deputy labor minister.

Spain's new conservative government is drawing up a more ambitious labor reform, but the country's powerful trade unions have already complained about the plan, due out in coming weeks.

Thursday's data showed that only 7.3% of all new contracts signed in January were permanent, evidence further job losses are in store. In a sour economy, employers prefer temporary workers, who are much cheaper and easier to fire.

Soaring unemployment adds to fears of a rapid downturn in Spain's economy.

The government said earlier this week that gross domestic product shrank by 0.3% in the fourth quarter from the third as the euro zone's deepening debt crisis undermined confidence and choked credit.

Rookie Williams: I’ll be OK for ‘D’ Bowl
[info]doiyhy

Known for his speed, Jacquian Williams isn’t moving too quickly.

The rookie linebacker is sporting a large, cumbersome walking boot on his right foot reaching up nearly to his knee.

Williams hasn’t practiced the past two days and won’t practice today, the final workout for the Giants before they leave on Monday for Indianapolis, site of Super Bowl XLVI. This doesn’t sound like an encouraging scenario for Williams, but he said nothing will keep him from missing the Patriots on Feb. 5.

“Nothing serious, I’ll be ready for the game,’’ Williams said yesterday.

Williams came out of the 20-17 overtime victory over the 49ers in the NFC title game with what he felt was normal after-game soreness in his right foot. When the soreness lingered he brought it to the attention of the Giants medical personnel and underwent an MRI exam, which revealed there were no broken bones.

Nevertheless, his sprained foot was placed in the boot, and there has been no activity for Williams all week.

“[It was] Something that just snuck up on me,’’ Williams said. “Just a minor setback.’’

The Giants listed Williams as questionable if the game were to be played this Sunday. Their first practice in Indianapolis is Wednesday, and Williams said he is “100 percent’’ certain he will be able to practice then.

“I’ll be there,’’ he said. “Ain’t no turning back, I’ll be myself, I won’t even think about it.’’

If healthy, Williams is going to be an important player for the Giants, as he will be needed in some capacity dealing with the Patriots’ dangerous tight ends, Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez.
